Queer Medicine: Research Meets Lived Experience

In 2024, Qasa partnered with Unlimited Sciences on a naturalistic study exploring a seven-day Sacred Plant Retreat experience with LGBTQIA+ participants. The project brought research and personal stories together to expand conversations about safety, belonging, and queer wellbeing.

Getting to Qasa

Qasa is located near Dominical, Costa Rica, approximately 3.5-4.5 hours from San José International Airport. Scheduled ground transportation is included for retreat participants at specified arrival and departure times.

From San José

Join the scheduled retreat transfer or arrange private ground transportation.

From Quepos

Take a short domestic flight from San José, followed by ground transportation to Qasa.

A 4WD vehicle is recommended and may be required during the rainy season.

Qasa offers an eco-chic boutique hotel and transformational experiences, including sacred plant journeys, nature-based adventures and embodied pleasure retreats. We also offer intentional gatherings, parties, and festivals, as well as daily world-class classes, workshops, and events.

Yes! You can stay with us as a hotel guest during “off-retreat” times. It’s a beautiful way to enjoy nature, community, and rest. Check availability here.

Absolutely. We celebrate body freedom and comfort. Nudity is welcome in common areas, and respected as a non-sexual form of self-expression. Please always sit on a towel 🙂

Participation is always discussed during screening and remains a personal choice. You can ask questions, discuss concerns, and understand the retreat structure before confirming your place.

Awaken costs between $2,950 and $4,000 per person, depending on accommodation. The price includes six nights of lodging, meals, retreat programming, scheduled airport transportation, preparation, integration resources, and access to the Qasa community.

Yes. Many men attend alone. The retreat provides opportunities for community and connection while also allowing space for privacy, rest, and personal reflection.

You complete an eligibility form, attend a screening conversation, review the required agreements, confirm payment, and receive preparation guidance. Your place is confirmed once the required steps are complete.

Rafa is a native of Brasil and a lifelong seeker of healing, connection, and transformation. His journey has led him through diverse landscapes-both inner and outer-from his decade-long career in education, where he earned M.S. and M.Ed. degrees and served as a teacher and school principal, to deep immersion in the wisdom of the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest.

Rafa emerges as a Therapeutic Sacred Plant Preparation & Integration Specialist and Sacred Plant Guide, dedicated to bringing balance back into the inner and outer world of his clients-helping them weave the seen and unseen together so they can live in greater harmony.

As a queer, neurodivergent, and highly sensitive person (HSP), he deeply understands the nuances of personal healing and expansion. Drawing from his unique synthesis of experiences, his work bridges Indigenous wisdom with a grounded, an integrative therapeutic approach. The compassionate leadership skills honed through his educational background, combined with the sacred teachings received from Indigenous Shipibo curanderos, allow him to hold space for personal expansion with deep empathy and care. He creates a safe, trauma-informed container where his clients can show up authentically and courageously explore what truly calls to be seen within them.

John Jacob Mubarak is a passionate advocate for holistic healing and integrates the power of sacred plants, breathwork, psychology, philosophy, science and ancient wisdom teachings into his retreats to guide individuals towards profound personal and professional growth.

With a background as an Agape Licensed Spiritual Therapist, Elemental Rhythm Breathwork Facilitator, and Teacher in Residence at the Rythmia Life Advancement Center in Costa Rica, John is dedicated to sharing the Sacred Truth Principles of Acceptance, Joy & Oneness. Through his retreats, breathwork sessions, teachings, and private healing sessions, he empowers participants to unlock their Infinite potential and discover their interconnectedness with the Divine.

John Jacob’s passion and dedication to the study of sacred plants of Central and South America have propelled him on a profound journey of healing and transformation. For the last six years, he worked with thousands of clients helping them to integrate their powerful experiences with sacred plants.
